The best tax residency tracker apps in 2026

If you split the year between countries, an app that counts your days is cheaper than one surprise tax bill. Here are the trackers worth considering, what each does best and where each falls short.

Disclosure: we make Nomad Tracker, so it is listed first. Everything about the other apps comes from their own App Store pages and websites, checked on October 20, 2026, and their strengths are listed as plainly as ours. If you find a mistake, tell us and we will correct it.

How we compared them

Does it count days on its own?

Manual logging fails the week you forget. Automatic GPS tracking, and ways to rebuild the past from photos, a calendar or documents, decide whether the count holds up a year later.

Does it know the rules you live under?

Schengen is a rolling 180 day window, not a calendar year. Tax residency depends on your country's fiscal year. US citizens abroad need the 330 day FEIE test, and moving between US states brings state residency into play.

Can you prove it?

A day count is only as good as the evidence behind it. Proof attached to each day and a PDF or CSV export for your accountant matter more than a pretty dashboard.

What happens to your data?

Your travel history says where you live. Check whether an app needs an account and what its developer declares on the App Store before you hand it your travel history.

1. Nomad Tracker

iPhone, iPad and Mac · 4.9 from 30 ratings across all App Store countries

Best for digital nomads and expats who want one app for visas and taxes: automatic GPS tracking, Schengen 90/180, the 183 day rule with any fiscal year, the FEIE 330 day test and all 50 US states plus DC, with no account.

It fills in the past three ways: photo metadata (free), read only calendar sync and a Proof Classifier that attaches boarding passes and invoices to the day they prove (both Pro). Location is processed on the device; the privacy label declares only an anonymous device ID for analytics, which you can switch off.

Falls short on Android (there is no Android app) and the UK Statutory Residence Test, which it does not model beyond the 6 April tax year.
